History of Holy Cross Girls' Hostel, Depacherra Tripura

Since, 1988 Bethany Sisters have been working in Depacherra, Gomati District, Tripura in collaboration with the Indian Province of the Fathers of Holy Cross represented by the Provincial. Rev. Father Abraham Mattakottil CSC was the then Provincial. Than on sisters have been looking after the affairs of the Girls’ Hostel. It was during Sr Sylvine as the Superior General our congregation. Initially even the boys till 8 years were kept with the sisters. Even after the Parish was taken up by the Diocesan Fathers the Holy Cross Girls' Hostel was under Christ the King Parish, Depacherra. Parish Priest /Principal was managing the total affairs of the hostel. However, Bethany Sisters have been taking care of the Holy Cross Girls' Hostel as far as it was possible, with regard to minding their studies and maintaining discipline.

It was only in 2017 the Most Rev. Lumen Montero, CSC, DD, Bishop of Agartala decided that the Holy Cross Girls’ Hostel Depacherra be handed over to the Congregation of the Sisters of the little Flower of Bethany w.e.f.10th January 2017. The Bethany Sisters, represented by Sr M Joy BS Provincial Superior of Bethany North East Province in consultation with her council and the sisters of the Bethany Convent Depacherra, was glad to accept the total care of the Hostel Students on the said date. There after the Holy Cross Girls’ Hostel was placed under Bethany Educational Society Mangalore, North East Province Unit.

In 2017, Sr Celestina Handak took up as the first Incharge of Holy Cross Girls’ Hostel. There after Sr Anna Marak, Sr Gladys and presently Sr Remee Maring is the Incharge of the Hostel. Summing up together the hard labour, dedication and sacrifice of our past Sisters and the present, the hostel mission here is flourishing. Children are given opportunities to develop themselves not only in education alone but towards holistic growth. Right now we are blessed to have 156 children from KG II to cl XI.

Sisters are trying their best to help them grow intellectually, morally, spiritually, emotionally and in their all round development by journeying with them, caring for them and loving them. Sisters render yeomen service in order to empower and help them to stand up in their society as dignified and enlightened women of the day.
