The Bishop of Chikmagular Most Rev. John Baptist Sequeira during his pastoral visit to Mudigere met Sr Sheela the Superior and sisters and requested them pressingly to begin a High School from the point of serving the poor Catholics of this and surrounding parishes.
Fr Marcel Pinto the then Parish Priest of St Anthony’s Church Mudigere was very helpful in getting permission from the President of the Jilla Panchayath and from the Deputy Director of Public Instruction for the High School. When the project was implemented the Bishop expressed his gratitude to Mother Sylvine the then Superior General and Sr. Jyothi BS the then BES Secretary and Sr. Dymphna the Provincial Superior.
The dream was realized and St Martha’s High School was blessed on June 1989 by Most Rev John Baptist Sequeria, the Bishop of Chikmagalur and inaugurated by Sr Agnella, the Vice President of Bethany Educational Society. Sr Louisia was the Pioneering Headmistress who joyfully agreed to serve the poor students.
The Government adopted a new policy saying that it would not give grant to the school permanently and we were asked to write on the stamp paper that we would run the school without claiming aid permanently. Therefore the Management thought of discontinuing the school. At this juncture Mrs. Motamma intervened, met the Chief Minister, Mr Molly and pressurized him not to close down the school as there is need for the same. Due to her efforts the school continued.
The first batch of children appeared for SSLC Exam in 1992 and secured 95.63% result. The School received a rolling shield from the Lions Club for securing the second highest percentage in the SSLC Examination in Mudigere Taluk. The school was recognised without grant in aid on 13th December 1993. Later responding to public pressure, parallel English Medium section to the High School was added in 1995. The first batch of 25 students of English medium secured 100% result.
The Kannada Medium got grant in aid on 10.08 2009. It was indeed a boon to the Management. In 2014 the School completed 25 years and Silver Jubilee was celebrated with due solemnity.
Meanwhile the number of students both in Kannada and English Medium got increased and a new Building was put-up. At present there are 159 students in Kannada Medium and 87 students in English Medium School. The teachers are working hard and that is the reason for good results. The school is leading both in curricular and co-curricular activities and has gained name in the taluk and the district. Thanks to BES Bangalore and BES Mangalore for their timely guidance and support.
