The Sisters of the Little Flower of Bethany in Jyothi Nilaya Community at Kacharakanahalli were imparting education through Jyothi Higher Primary and High School in vernacular medium since 1971 and 1977 respectively. In 2002 Pre-University classes commenced with all three streams Arts, Science and Commerce to make higher education possible for the deserving students of our own institutions.
The local leaders and people around considered Jyothi school as one of the best schools in the area catering to the needs of the poor and the marginalized. They expressed their desire and need of having an English Medium High School to respond to the signs of the time and to facilitate continuing their education in Pre-University College. The Management, Bethany Educational Society ® Mangalore met their need and started Jyothi English Medium High School in 2003 with 25 students. Sr Emil BS was appointed as first headmistress of the school.
Most of the students were from the lower middle class, a few of them from vernacular medium. They were deprived of suitable atmosphere for studies in their families. The headmistress and teachers arranged for special coaching after class hours bestowing on them love and care. In March 2006 the first batch of students appeared for their SSLC examination and secured 76.77% result. The dream of the Management to educate the economically backward became a reality. As the years went by the strength of the students increased and the result improved. They were given opportunities to participate in sports, co- curricular activities and inter school competitions and they excelled in them.
The school which began with 25 students in 2003 has catered to the educational needs of 505 students over the years. It is heartening to know many of the students have excelled in their studies as doctors, engineers and are in touch with the school with gratitude. The school aims at imparting value based quality education for integrated development of the whole person. It school has become the home and hope for the excluded needy children of the neighbourhood. Sr Ann Teresa is the present Correspondent and Sr Simon BS is the present Headmistress of the school.
