On the edges of the Western Ghats, in the district of Shimoga in Karnataka state, is a small tranquil town named Sagar. It is known for its proximity to the Jog Fails and to the historical places of Ikkeri and Keladi. Sagar derives its name from the lake, Sadashiva Sagar. Sadashiva ruler of Keladi dynasty built this lake between Keladi and Ikkeri.
It was in 1950, the grace filled year of the twin jubilee of the Founder namely, the platinum Jubilee of his birth and golden jubilee of his priestly ordination that Bethany made an entry into Sagar in the district of his birth-place, Shimoga, in the diocese of Mysore. Mgr. Raymond Mascarenhas the Founder was inspired to send sisters to the remotest parts of Karnataka to have the gospel preached to the poor. Responding to the invitation of Fr Fulgence Lopez, on 16 May 1950 five sisters Sr Lazarus, Sr Rifa, Sr Clemence, Sr Gemma, Sr Presenta and Magi Bai the helper landed in Sagar.
The administration of St Joseph’s primary school comprising standard 1 to 4th was handed over to the Bethany sisters by an agreement between the bishop and the superior general on 23 March 1950. The school was started by Fr Fernandes, the Parish Priest in 1927. It was recognized by the government in 1953 and was admitted to grant-in-aid in 1934. Sri Lazarus was first headmistress of the primary school. The nursery school was begun by the sisters on 15 June 1950 at the request of the public. It was recognized by the educational department and received partial financial aid from the government the same year Mother Gemma was in charge of the nursery School. By their dedicated and loving approach the sisters gained confidence of the people and the school flourished.
The middle school was opened on 22 May 1954 Sr Azella was the first headmistress of the middle school. The existing new Kannada medium building built in the year 1933. It was blessed and inaugurated by most Rev. Ignatius pinto on 6th December 1993 under the leadership of Sr Tressy the Headmistress.
