St. Joseph’s High School was established in 1987 at Kankanady in the heart of the city of Mangalore situated in the west coastal region of Karnataka.It came into existence in answer to the crying need of the children of the poor and marginalized of the city and its suburbs for secondary education who otherwise had to discontinue their study after primary level.

It is the fruit of the untiring toil and efforts of the Management - Bethany Educational Society and the co-operation of the Parent Teacher Association of St. Joseph’s Higher Primary School.  Class rooms were provided by the Management by raising a floor on the existing building of the Primary School.  The following persons have contributed to the birth and growth of the school. 

St. Jyothi BS the then Secretary of the BES, Sr. Noel BS the Correspondent, Sr Elvera BS the Headmistress of the St. Joseph’s Higher Primary School, Mr. Hameed Kandak the Vice President of the PTA to make it possible.  Sr Patrina BS, Sr Leera Maria BS and Sr Celesta BS have played a great role as Headmistressesin running the school efficiently with the co-operation of the staff. Sr Theresine BS, Sr Sharon BS, Sr Mariette BS, Sr Lillis BS, Sr Marie Lyta BS, Sr Shubha BS and Sr Sandhya BS have served as Correspondents of this institution.  Mrs Sylvia Gretta is the present Headmistress while Sr Maureen BS functions as Correspondent.

From 1987 to 2008 the Management has run the school from its own resources without Government aid. The Management has also given furniture, equipment and a land of 10 cents for games facility. The school was admitted to Grant-in-aid by the department of education in the year 2009.

In the past 30 years, true to the vision and charism of the Servant of God Raymond Francis Camillus Mascarenhasthe Founder of the Congregation and Bethany Educational Society the school has catered to the poor of the locality and of the neighbouring villages, imparting value based quality education to the students irrespective of caste and creed. Importance is given to all round formation of students by providing ample opportunities to exhibit their talents along with the academic studies.
