People of Ajekar and its surrounding villages had no access to high school education until 1964. Having felt the need of educating the rural poor, late Rev. Fr Ligouri D’Souza, the then Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Church, Ajekar met the village leaders and decided to open a high school at Ajekar. The name ‘Jyothi’ was selected by the people themselves with a reason that it suits all religions. Rev. Fr. Ligouri D’Souza had three spacious rooms built in collaboration with the people for classrooms. He invited the Bethany sisters and handed over the project to them in June1964. People of Ajekar had rendered their voluntary service to construct the school building which exists even today.
Co-education in schools run by the Religious Sisters was unknown in those days. Hence special permission was obtained from the Church authorities for such a venture. The Bethany sisters under the guidance of Superior General Mother Macrina opened class VIII on 22-06-1964; they were given land by Karkal Attur Parish through Rt. Rev. Dr Raymond D’Mello the then Bishop of Mangalore.

This dream came true on 14-12-2012 when it was opened in the presence of an august gathering present to witness the Annual Day of the school.
