In response to the clarion call of preaching the Good News to the ends of the world, our Founder spread the wings of Bethany to the northern horizon of India. Bethany’s entry into the soil of Punjab came with the invitation of Bishop Burke of Simla-Chandigarh Diocese. This was to take charge of the English medium school at Model Town in Karnal started by Fr Christanand. SrAgnella and SrVerena who visited the place, voted in favour. Accordingly St Theresa’s Convent School was formally taken over by Bethany on January 14, 1961. It had a marvellous growth under the dynamic leadership of Sr Oliva and Sr Genevieve. In the following year it was made over to the expert hands of Sr Violette who had just returned from the United States, completing her higher studies. With her versatile personality, far-sighted vision and wide experience, she gave a new face to this infant institution.
The fast-developing School in Model Town needed to be transferred to a suitable place. Soon a plot of land was bought on Kunjpura Road and plans were afoot to put up a decent building, to which the School was subsequently shifted. The principals in succession, Srs Hyacinth, Esuria, Ann Teresa, Jyoti, Grace Maria, Miriam, Hilerian and Rosalie brought a new dynamism to make it a reputed centre in Haryana. At the outset the School was affiliated to the Council for Indian School Certificate. Later, at the request of parents, it was affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education.
In the academic field the students have excelled and secured ranks and distinctions in CBSC examinations. The science and humanities clubs function efficiently to make the School a centre of learning. For athletics and games, a beautiful ground with table tennis, basketball and football courts has been provided. Due importance is giveto value education and other co-curricular activities such as music, dance, drama, gymnastics and yoga. In view of further expansion and to provide better facilities the kindergarten and primary classes were shifted in 1996 to the magnificent building constructed on the plot acquired from the Haryana Urban Development Authority.
Upgrading the School to the Senior Secondary status, offering medical, non-medical and humanities streams, on April 10, 1995 is a major milestone in the history of St Theresa’s. The first batch of students who appeared for the examination in 1997 passed creditably. Majority of them got admitted into Medical, Engineering, Hotel Management, B.B.A. and other professional colleges purely on merit.
The staff members too played their role in bringing credit to this institution. Mrs ShobhaAnand was selected by the CBSC to be trained as a fieldworker and Research Data Collector by the Central Institute of English and Foreign a
The outreach programmes gained momentum with the introduction of Leadership Training service and other social service projects. In 1978 tailoring centres were opened for illiterate women and girls. The District Adult Education Officer who visited the centre was so impressed that he donated sewing machines and granted financial aid. This encouraged others, specially the prominent doctors, to render voluntary medical service to the poor people of the villages in the vicinity. The women are trained in skills to make them self-reliant.The staff and students have also participated in the literacy mission of the government.
St Theresa’s Convent School was accredited to National Open School in 1992, and since then hundreds of dropouts have been helped to complete their education at secondary and senior secondary level.
St Theresa’s continues to forge ahead without thinking of resting on its laurels. The institute’s only aim is to praise God and to work for the betterment of fellow human beings
