For ages, sages and rishis have experienced the presence of God on mountaintop, the abode of the Divine. The steep path to Mary Mount School, situated on hilltop at Kulikawn, Aizwal, the capital of Mizoram, is similar to a pilgrimage to a holy mountain. Indeed Mary Mount is a Holy Mount, an abode of peace and joy, a fountain of Christian education of thousands of young Mizo boys and girls who will shape the future of the State.
In 1952 a Mizo medium elementary and middle school, named St Paul’s School, was started by the Canadian Holy Cross Brothers with Br Godfrey C.S.C. as its headmaster. In 1968, the Canadian Brothers had to leave Mizoram for good, due to government policy. At the invitation of Mgr George Breen, C.S.C. the Prefect Apostolic of Halflong, the Bethany Sisters took over the administration of the School in February 1969, changing the medium of instruction to English and renaming it Mary Mount School. Sr Gretta, along with her team Srs Lourdina, Livinia, Ottilia and the others who joined later, had to weather many west winds blowing from political upheavals, poor communication system and scarcity of food and inadequate knowledge of the local language. It is to their great credit that the Sisters withstood all these difficulties and worked with dedication and devotion.
The successive headmistresses, Srs Hariette, Lillita, Edleburgh, Christita, Kiran, Hildigard and Lucious have worked untiringly to make it a centre of Christian education. Hundreds of children are trained and motivated to be the future leaders of society. The spirit of healthy competition through various inter-house activities is the important feature of the School. The name of Mary Mount is on every lip. The students are prepared to answer the public examination of Mizoram Board of School Education and have notched first positions. They are equally good at State level competitions, bagging several awards and prizes. We are proud to see the fruit of the hard work of the dedicated band of 30 teaching and non-teaching staff, including five Sisters.
Being a hilly terrain Mary Mount is prone to frequent landslides every year. It was only in panic and trauma that we faced two mountain slides in 1986 and 1987. Praise be to the Almighty who held us in his hands during these calamities.
Service to man is service to God - this is put into practice by the Marians. The children are taught to share with the have-nots. Visiting the families of the poor and the needy has created an awakening of the social realities among the staff and students.
Through the intercession of our patron, Mary our Mother we pray to God, to uphold the holy mountain and protect all the inmates of this institute. We shall work to mould the children to stand for God and his Kingdom. Long live the Marian family!
