An English medium school has been a crying need for long, in the hilly, educationally backward district of Waynad, Kerala. The local gentry approached the late Fr Joseph Kizhakebhagham with their pressing request. Accordingly St Joseph’s Convent School was opened at Kalpetta on 25 June 1973. The guiding hand was Mother Macrina and the first headmistress, Sr Zeena. The beginnings were humble – 18 students and a ramshackle building.
In 1984 the School got the government recognition up to the upper primary level. Unremitting efforts to obtain recognition for a high school proved futile because of the negative attitude of the government to English medium schools. Affiliation to the CBSE came in 1998. Progress was meteoric: 650 students and 31 teachers are currently on the roll; Special attention is given to average students and a helping hand to the not-so-well-off.
A parallel college for girls has been functioning since 1995, preparing students for the Pre-degree course. Three batches of 180 students have taken the PDC Examination and the results are encouraging. Besides academics, seminars and prayer meetings, vocational courses are arranged to broaden the mental horizon of the students. ‘Uplift of Women’ has been the guiding principle of this parallel College.
