June 14: Knowing our roots and appreciating our own culture is a good way of building healthy self-esteem. The stronger the roots, the healthier the tree and the more fruits it bears. Realising the importance of being grounded in one’s culture, understanding and appreciating the past, students of class 8 had a visit to the museum on Monday the 10th of June 2024. The museum set up and managed by The Young Mizo Association (YMA), Diakkawn Branch houses a good collection of traditional art and craft items, war instruments, household articles used in times past. There are also some pieces related to Mizo heroes and heroines, rulers and chieftains who governed their people with great wisdom and are held in high esteem even now.
The museum is the first of its kind in the district and is well-organised. It is an excellent place to educate the young about the history of their land and their people. The students were given a guided tour of the place and each item on display was explained to them at length. Majority of the students were seeing most of these cultural artifacts for the first time as they are no longer in use in the present generation. No wonder they were so wide-eyed. It was a satisfying experience both for the students and the teachers who accompanied them. The visit to the museum will have a lasting impact on the students and make them value and respect their past and appreciate their present.
